The New Home

17 Sep

In our neighborhood, you turn on your outside light when it gets dark and you leave it on.

That’s what Susan and I were told the second night we when we had moved in to our newly acquired home in the middle of the suburbs. It was an absolutely gorgeous house. Two stories with a balcony on the second level. There were three bathrooms and 4 bedrooms and to say the place felt like a mansion to the both of us was an understatement. The price had been relatively cheap and we were unable to find a good reason why. Even our realtor couldn’t give us a good answer, but with Susan starting her new job on Monday and the price being great, we took the place as swiftly as the early bird catching the worm.

The warning about the light didn’t come right away. I believe this was due to the fact that we simply couldn’t figure out where the hell to turn it off so there was no reason to warn us. Where most homes have the switch next to the front door, ours was not there. In fact, there were hardly any light switches to be found in our front living room. Again, both Susan and myself found this odd, but hadn’t noticed it before we moved in. Besides, we were busy trying to get all of our worldly possessions into the home over the course of one weekend.

We had moved into a tiny little suburb of Nashville after uprooting our lives from Minneapolis. My wife was a gifted song writer and had taken a full time job in Nashville to help collaborate on works for struggling artists. She was given the gig after helping to write some of the lines to Machine Gun Kelly’s diss rap of Eminem.

This was an opportunity of a lifetime for her but the problem was that they wanted her to start immediately and so the chaos ensued. Within a week we had found our home and from there the company she now works for sent people to help pack all of our stuff, throw it into a moving vehicle, and then helped us haul our lives 13 hours south. When we finally arrived in our new home, there was a chaotic flurry of commotion as we got all the boxes placed in the proper rooms before sending our help on their way.

By the time we had finally settled in, we were exhausted. A quick call for takeout was sent in and we both sat on our floor in relative silence, slurping down noodles and dipping our chicken in some broth. When we finished eating, I offered to take out the trash while Susan went to go lie down for the night.

Walking outside and down to the curb where our can was, one that had been quickly delivered by the city, I noticed that every home in our neighborhood not only had their outside lights on, but also kept their yards in pristine condition. I thought it was rather odd and as I kept on walking I noticed another oddity to the neighborhood. Silence. Although fall had just taken its hold on the community, with dead leaves lying gently in the street, there was no noise. Not a single car going by or insect chirping loudly into the cool evening. There was no wind shaking the trees or bushes for added sound. It was simply quiet. It made my skin crawl and goosebumps began popping up on my flesh. I hurried to the can and threw away the trash from our dinner, making sure to keep the lid from slamming shut before bustling my way back to the house.

I went to tell Susan about how eerily silent our neighborhood was and how uneasy it made me feel, but she was already lying on the mattress fast asleep. My fear slipped away as she let out a loud snore and I watched as her curly hair fell over her face as she rolled over. In that moment, I decided I was being irrational about the eery silence outside and instead I let the wave of fatigue from this past week roll over me as I flopped onto the mattress next to her. I reached over and grabbed a blanket out of the box she had found and threw it over myself. Soon I was like her, snoring gently while tossing and turning in my sleep.

Writing Prompt: DA BEARS

12 Sep

So as per usual, yesterday I released my weekly writing prompt which you can read here.  However, for the purpose of this post, I will do a quick highlight of it and say that the prompt asked for people to write about their favorite things. One of mine is the Chicago Bears. Without further ado, here is how I wrote the prompt.

(Btw this is quick take of last week’s game and how I felt)

The old boogyman had returned from the shadows of the locker room. We had thought we had crippled him, taken him out of the game. Chicago had unleashed their monsters in the first half, a destructive force that had been missing for the past several years. The boogyman had seemed frightened and wounded, hauled off in a cart while leaving his newest prodigy to be feasted on by the ravished monsters of the midway.

But then he returned, pumped full of magic juice that let him forget about the leg the monsters had tried to take. He stood their and fired off his cannon over and over into the helpless swarm of monsters. The boogyman had returned, garbed in his horrendous green and yellow attire, a color scheme only the most dimwitted of fans could admire, and he attacked.

And attacked.

The boogyman had returned to strike fear into the hearts of every Chicago fan, with every play leading closer to their fall. An all to familiar narrative began to unfold. The offense of the Bears, grizzly and aggressive in the first half fell to a whimper and soft swipes at the opposing defense. The monsters of the midway ran and hid as the boogyman sliced and diced his way through them, chipping away at their power.

There were a few valiant attempts by both the offense and defense in the end to slay the beast from the north, but they failed like so many had before. When the clock hit zero, the boogyman had done it again, he had ripped the heart out of Chicago Bear fans all over again.

Throughout their fan base, heads fell painfully into hands. Things were thrown and cussing ensued. A false hope had been born that this was the year the Bears would be feared again. Instead, a resounding message spread gently through the ether, “there are the bears we know and love.”

And with that message, a painful reminder was born. Win or lose, your favorite team will still be one that you’ll begrudgingly love. We’ll see you in December number 12.

And that’s my coverage of my writing prompt for the week. As you can see I decided to write on my favorite sports team, the Chicago Bears. However, instead of doing a traditional post following the format of “this is my favorite thing and here is why,” I decided to try and tell a story without a traditional way of reporting on a sporting event.

The main reason I chose to write it this way is because I know not everyone is into sports and so I wanted to make fun and interesting to read for those that don’t follow football. I made the opposition an enemy while trying to show the bears as a hero while still sticking with the fan base’s nickname for the Chicago Bear defense.

I hope you enjoyed the piece and check back in tomorrow to see what new content will be headed your way!

Update On….ME!

6 Sep

Hey everybody, so I just thought I would just do a quick post today to give an update on me, myself, and I. It will basically cover what I’ve been working on and why there haven’t been as many posts as I usually do.

So to start things off, I would like to let everyone know that if you have the time and energy, I will be doing a book signing of A Monstrous Tomorrow in Peru, Illinois. Details are listed on my Facebook page. The event will run from 1-3:30 with yours truly doing a reading from the book (which story is still being determined) along with a Q&A session after. There will be a limited quantity of books for sale and will run $10 a piece. Please bring cash or make sure to try and get your copy of the book through Amazon ASAP.

Next order of business is the sequel to A Monstrous Tomorrow, or as it its known on this blog, A Book Has No Name. As it stands, I’ve only written one chapter since the last time I gave any information on the book. As a reminder, it will be a full length novel and not a collection of short stories this time around. It will feature one of the characters from A Monstrous Tomorrow, so if you’re interested in the second book of The Forsaken World Chronicles, I highly recommend reading A Monstrous Tomorrow.

Besides the book, there are two other projects I’m working on. One is entirely under wraps but let me just say, when it’s done, everyone will fall in love with it. The other is of course, Pantheon Productions. We have backtracked a bit and began filming short creative pieces again and look forward to getting those out to the public soon. In the meantime, I am continuing to try and strive towards making our three fiction towns feel as real as possible.

I believe that is it for now. As it stands, my focus over the past two weeks was first vacation and now my book signing. After this weekend, my focus will return to solely the blog and only my writing projects.

Make sure to come back tomorrow because I can guarantee there will be a new fiction piece up for everyone to enjoy!

Weekly Writing Practice: World Building

28 Aug

It’s that time of the week again folks! The time where I tell you what to write and you go ahead and do it! As always, I am always open to reading anyone’s prompt, so feel free to share it on one of my many pages. I’ll do my best to respond and give feedback to your work.

Anyway, onwards to this week’s prompt!

If you read yesterday’s writing corner at all, you’ll know that this week is going to focus heavily on world building. Why world building you may ask. Well for one, it’s important to really know the setting that you are going to be working in. As I stated yesterday, the more you know of your world and the mechanics that exist in it, the better the odds are of writing a greater story.

The other reason is simple. I’m struggling with my own setting so having a writing prompt that helps you, also helps me! It’s a win-win.

So this week we really want to focus on building your setting up. So go ahead, tell me a bit about your world! Does it take place here on Earth or does it take place on another planet? Maybe it is on Earth but in a different time period. Maybe it doesn’t even exist in our universe. Get creative and funky with it, tell me where your setting takes place.

While we’re at it, once you know the planet your on, tell me about the continent. Or maybe it’s one giant country. Tell me how the mechanics of your world come together. Then tell me the region your story takes place in. Bring that microscope in closer and show me a city. Or a town. Or hell, maybe it’s even just a home in the country.

Paint me a picture. Let me see the world that your characters in habit.

Don’t forget to tell me about the weather and environment as well. Is it always hot or always cold? Maybe it’s neither. Does it rain a lot or is it always sunny, like in Philadelphia. (See what I did there? It’s a really bad joke.) Is there wind and if so how much, if any? Is the world exotic and would be exotic by our standards or book standards.

When it comes to writing setting, there is so much that you can show a reader. So show me a bit of your world. Write a couple paragraphs that make me feel like I’ve just sat down and have been transported to your world. Make it fun and make it unique!

As always, check back in tomorrow where I’ll throw together my own exotic world for everyone to fall into.

Journal Entry 2: Where Are They?

31 Jul

I hope you read this knowing that for the time being, my life is safe. I’ve moved locations since my last post and despite feeling like Frodo hiding from Sauron with the ring, I believe I have time to push out more information. At least, I hope.

I’ve had to resort to stealing and living in a world cut off from society. I have an old flip phone in case of emergencies, and oh how it drives me mad not to be able to have social media downloaded to it in these lonely times. The building I’m in is condemned and as I lie here on this old, forgotten mattress, the wafting smell of piss keeps penetrating my nostrils and making it hard to write. Already it has begun to get dark and I worry this old wood will go up in flame from the candle light I’m working under. Normally I would work with just the glow of my computer screen, but I can’t risk it showing my location and letting the business nearby know I’m using their wifi.

Enough about my struggles though, I must get back to talking about these creatures, and fast. I know I can no longer do anything about them, but maybe, just maybe, you can. I have found out they are all still alive today, but not all of them are working together. There are factions amongst their ranks. By my count, there are four factions in all.

The first faction I believe operates somewhere within the banking system. From what I can tell they run on a global scale. The head of this faction operates somewhere over seas, maybe in Swedish accounts. As of late he’s brought in two cronies from the beginning. The first is his right hand woman. She generally is found in yellow, flowery clothes, but don’t let that fool you. She’s a shark for money in any way she can get her hands on it and will bleed the middle class dry to help her boss and the top one percent succeed. The other follower is a woman that dresses in violet. She works as a middle man between millionaires and billionaires to the banks. When speaking to her, you can tell she thinks highly of herself and of the status in society that was thrust upon her.

The next faction resides somewhere in either the U.S. or Russian military, but I haven’t been able to place it as of yet. So far all I know is the leader of this faction is a general and a ruthless one at that. He will stop at nothing to win any battle that he may be thrust in to, and at any cost. Just like the other faction, this leader has a right hand man. From what I gathered this will be a young man with an obsession of the color red. I haven’t been able to gather much, other than the fact he is short in stature and has a short temper to match it. He will often be found with a comrade decked head to toe in green clothing. This man will watch how the short tempered one and the general interact with each other and have nothing but contempt in his eye. This faction, in my opinion, is the most dangerous. They will be quick to lash out and destroy anything in their path.

The next group I found, however, seems to be the weakest. It would be of no surprise to me if they ended up going their separate ways or joining with one of the stronger factions later on. This group doesn’t so much have a leader and follower system like the others. No I believe they are lovers, a sort of yin and yang to one another as they bring their chaos across the United States. One of them loves to work with the poor and downtrodden and was last seen in Flint, Michigan wearing all black, looking almost like he wanted to imitate Johnny Cash. Meanwhile, his wife was hard at work in Hollywood overseeing all sorts of experiments on video and film. She works tirelessly to ensure that people are always seated and consuming the media that is produced from there.

The final faction is the one that I have the least amount of information on. The leader of the group seems almost non-existent save for when major catastrophes pop up in the world. Many say that he is a plague on any civilization he touches but there just isn’t enough information to pin where he’s at in today’s world. From what I can tell though, he does have two henchmen. There is one that operates the food industry, helping to control how much the major nations eat versus the ones that don’t have a seat at the global table yet. The other works within the confines of the porn industry. It’s said that he helps to ensure they have open freedom in every nation porn is available and he fights for people to have access to it in nations that forbid it. I cannot fathom why this work is important.

That’s all of the information that I have for now. If I’m not found out and murdered in this building I will have more information tomorrow. My plan is to steal back to where my notes are on these terrible monsters and begin exposing their influence throughout history. Maybe then can we put names to faces. I will try my best to post again tomorrow at the same time and if a post does not appear, just know they have indeed caught up to me. Hopefully, I still have the edge.

Stay vigilant.
